Discriminating Irreverence

Jay-Z the Hypocrite

Recently the self-titled “best rapper alive” came out publicly to say:

I wouldn’t mind paying more taxes if it went to the things that really mattered,” adding that if the money goes towards health care, education, and to help people, “most people with a conscience, with some integrity, and moral fiber wouldn’t have any problem paying more taxes.”

We all have our views on proper taxation policy, but I think we could all agree that taxation is not the only method to achieve the goals Jay-Z enumerates. Which is why this story by The Daily is so telling:

The hip-hop artist gave just $6,431 to his own charity in 2010, a year in which he earned an estimated $63 million, according to tax records for the Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund examined by The Daily.

Apparently, Jay-Z supports the idea of being forced to support these projects, but when he has the opportunity to voluntarily  support the charity that he started, he chooses not to do so beyond 0.01%.

Actions speak louder than words; he’s got 99.99 problems but his charity ain’t one.
